We must begin our studies of the history of Southwest Asia with Abraham and the three monotheistic Semitic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Without an understanding of these three religions, one cannot begin to comprehend the history of the area. These three religions, which worship the same G-d as Abraham, have battled over Israel and the city of Jerusalem throughout history. We will look at the creation of Israel, and the affect the creation had on Palestinians.

The Ottoman Empire:
The Ottoman Empire was a Muslim Empire, that rivaled the largest and most powerful empires in the world. They controlled trade between Asia, Africa, and Europe, and controlled lands on all three continents.
Western Europe feared the spread of Islam, and began searching for other trade routes to Asia.
The Ottoman empire's greatest ruler was Suleiman the Magnificent.
The Ottoman Empire began to decline, but became involved in WWI with the Central Powers. The Ottoman Empire was dismantled and partitioned out to the Allied Powers at the end of WWI.
Great Britain gained control of Palestine (the land that will become Israel), which was inhabited and controlled by Arabs (Muslims) at the time.

The Founding of Israel (1948):
At the end of WWII, the United Nations determined that the Jews would need a place to call their own. Great Britain and the UN decided Palestine (originally the Jewish homeland of Canaan) would be the perfect place. Jews were extremely happy to have their "Promised Land" back; however, the Palestinian Arabs were very upset to be losing their homes, and the land that is sacred to them as well.
The map on the left shows the Palestinian land in green, and Jewish lands in white. As you can see, Jews have continued to move into Palestinian lands. Palestinians are forced to live in either Gaza Strip or the West Bank. Fighting over the land continues to today. We will study several Israeli and Palestinian children in a documentary (Promises), and their opinions on what is happening in Israel, and what the future holds for them and their land.

Palestine versus Israel:
We watched a wonderful video called Promises, that focuses on Palestinian and Israeli children, and their views of the conflict. The children begin with very negative feelings about one another, but eventually learn mutual respect for one another. I have included the trailer for the video below, and two epilogues to the video that show the children 7 years after the filming.
