South and East Asia History
We have arrived at my favorite time of the year! I just love teaching the history of South and East Asia, and only regret that I have but three weeks to do it in. We will begin, as we did in Southwest Asia, by discussing religions that began in the area: Buddhism and Hinduism.
Two of my favorite people of history will be discussed in depth: Siddhartha Gautama and Mohandas K. Gandhi. We will look at what their philosophies were, and how their ideas have effected the world (and even my students).
We will research colonization of Asia, and the road to independence for them (nonviolent protest).
We will look at the history of China and how communism under Chairman Mao Zedong effected China's past, present, and future.
The Koreas will be discussed, and we will do a case study of North Korea to see what extreme communism is like.
Finally we will look at Japan from the time they entered WWII to the present day. How were they able to rebuild from complete destruction to the powerhouse they are today?
Buckle up folks...this is going to be a fast and furious ride.

This video has actual footage of Mao Zedong and his Red Army. There is some good information here although it is a little more positive account of Mao than is warranted. This covers the civil wars between the KMT and the CCP as well as the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.
