Iran Hostage Crisis
The Iran Hostage Crisis took place from November 1979 until January 1981. The United States had helped to overthrown the Iranian Shah, and replaced him with a pro-American and pro-British leader. Many Iranians were unhappy with this change, and riots ensued in Iran. About 500 Iranian students took control of the US Embassy, and held 90 people hostage including 66 US citizens. The United States made a failed attempt to rescue the hostages.
The hostages were held for 444 days, and were eventually released to the United States. Iran still operates as a theocracy under the rule of the ayatollah. Iran's government supports terrorist organizations, and relations with the United States has not improved.
